History of Lynn Lake - A Manitoba Mining Town

February 4, 2008 – 5:47 pm

The Canadian town of Lynn Lake Manitoba has a very unique history. It is known as the “Town That Moved”. Around the time that ore bodies being mined at Sherridon Manitoba were nearing depletion, a new Nickel deposit was discovered in the Lynn Lake area. The mining company Sherritt Gordon Mines literally moved the community of Sherridon over the period of a couple of winters. This created the town of Lynn Lake, which has the distinction of being Manitoba’s first nickel mining community.

Lynn Lake has a rich history of mining as demonstrated by success of five underground mines as well as five open pit operations. Lynn Lake welcomes all those interested in conducting exploration in our area. There is still very good potential for the discovery of other world class mineral deposits in the Lynn Lake Greenstone Belt today.
